The online business landscape has been consistently evolving, and it has only pivoted with AI. The barrier to entry is low, and because of the accessibility, anyone can start a business. The dark side, a ton of noise and distractions. Gurus showing their lavish lifestyle, overnight success, vague promises, and clickbait
I have been observing the online business game for the past seven years as a freelancer.
I was looking for full-time jobs, stumbled upon freelancing, and continued. Coming from a place of survival, my only goal was to make as much as a decent full time job would pay..
Specialisation: It’s great to be a generalist to be an entrepreneur, but when people hire freelancers, they prefer specialists over a generalist 99% of the time.
Double down on your strength: Learn a skill that you are naturally good at to some degree, for example, if design is not your forte, don’t go for it. You won't be able to outcompete those who are passionate designers; you can learn and be good at it, but it’s going to take you more time, energy, and effort. At times, you will feel like forcing it. Instead, pick something that you enjoy doing, even if it gets extremely challenging
Don’t compare: Comparison is a thief of joy. Nobody is showing their struggles, and most importantly, we all have a different starting point, so it’s good to take inspiration, but don’t fall into the trap of self-doubt. Compare your past results and growth with today’s results and growth
Don’t be a loner: To thrive in business, you need to be open to learn, engaging, and communicating. You dont need to be an extrovert to be able to build connections, but be an approachable, easy-to-connect-with kind of person. A lone wolf can never outcompete a strong community working on achieving a mission, so it’s great to work alone, but in the long run, you will need people, the right people, so start connecting from today..
Recurring projects vs one of clients: To avoid fear and a feminine situation, build recurring projects instead of one of clients
Established business owners: The fastest way to fail in freelancing is working with early-stage businesses with no clarity and a poor budget; it’s not good for the business. It’s easier to help those who already have something going on for them. If someone has a great service and they are making sales already, with ads, you can double the sales. It’s also easy to measure the growth, and great to build a portfolio. But if you run ads for a new service provider for a new product and start working from level zero, you will be able to give results, but it's not worth the time and effort. Do work with them as well, but focus on seasoned business owners
Be your own case study: If you are offering a blog writing service, create a blog and first generate results for your own blog. If you are a video editor, build your own channel, grow it for yourself. If you are a copywriter, start writing on social media, blogs, and generate some results. If you are a social media manager, build your own social media. In 2025, people will hire based on their own results
Take freelancing as a first step, not a destination: There is a thing called stability, freelancing demands constant learning and unlearning, and upskilling. It can't be an escape from 9-5. It’s highly competitive and challenging. Clarify your goal and plan your next stage. If you find someone great to partner with, go ahead..
